On the 11th day of the 11th month students gathered at 11am, all wearing red poppies, to remember all those who have fallen in war. This year is particularly significant as it has been 100 years since the First World War. The student body observed a minutes silence and myself and two friends explained to the school the importance of this event. It was a moving and informative assembly, especially once the younger students realised the sacrifice so many have made to ensure the freedom of others, not just in the First World War but in all wars since.

We showed a short clip consisting of original war footage which was very emotional the quite as the students watched was admirable. I then spoke about why Rememberence day is also known as "Poppy Day" and recited a famous WW1 poem called "In Flanders fields" by John McCrae, May 1915.
